Kometa takes another big step forward for the environment
Among the Hungarian meat processing and meat products companies, Kometa 99 Zrt. of Kaposvár became the first to have a by-product processing plant. The plant, capable of processing 15,000 tonnes of waste per year, was inaugurated today, and Kometa is now making a profit as well as protecting the environment. The 1.4 billion HUF investment, of which Kometa financed around 50%, was made with the support of the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme. The company expects to generate additional revenues of HUF 6-700 million from the sale of processed by-products.
Background to the investment
The slaughterhouse of Kometa 99 Zrt. currently generates 8,000 tonnes of processable slaughterhouse by-products per year, the storage and disposal of which is both environmentally damaging and costly for the company. For environmental and cost-saving reasons, Kometa has invested in a new by-product processing plant with the support of the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme. The total project amount is HUF 1 357 933 953, the aid amount is HUF 663 519 477 and the intensity is 48,86%.

Modern technology
Waste that was previously unfit for processing has now been removed from the site. The system created by the investment will allow for the on-site disposal and processing of up to 15,000 tonnes of waste per year. The complete by-product plant comprises four blocks: a feedstock supply and transfer system, a process processing system and a processing odour destruction system. The high heat demand of the process processing system is met by a heat supply system with 2 boilers. The installation of the technology has been carried out with a main contractor (Secoser Ltd.) and several subcontractors (PCM Srl., Tecnoalimenta Sr., Airclean Srl. and Energo Prompt Ltd.), so that the combined operation of Italian and Hungarian equipment ensures the continuous production of the plant.
Animal feedingstuffs and pharmaceutical preparations of animal meal and oil
The technology allows the production of pig animal protein meal and feed fat, so that the protein meal is used as a feedstock for animal feed (currently for hobby animals), while the industrial fats and oils are used by the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, but also as fuel for cogeneration engines that generate electricity or can be used for animal feed.
Capacity, growth plans
As a result of the complete system, Kometa is currently planning to produce 2,300 tonnes of animal meal and 1,300 tonnes of animal fat/oil per year. This is expected to result in an increase of HUF 600-700 million in turnover and HUF 350-400 million in EBITDA.
