2022. 17 March – The foundation stone of the new plant of KOMETA 99 Zrt. was laid, marking the start of the doubling of capacity of Hungary’s leading pork processor. The Hungarian government is contributing HUF 10.88 billion to the HUF 30.81 billion development. The investment will create more than 280 new jobs, with a focus on environmental protection.
KOMETA has started a HUF 30.81 billion infrastructure development at its Kaposvár site. During the expansion of production capacity, a large-scale purchase of machinery for the production of prepared products and meat processing, a new cold store, a salami slicer, and packaging and warehouse functions will be built. The Hungarian State will provide 35.3% of the investment to increase competitiveness and efficiency through non-reimbursable ECSC aid. The construction works will be carried out in 4 phases. The building permit for the first phase is already available, the construction plans are being prepared and the contractors are being pre-selected.
The investment will further strengthen the company’s product portfolio in packaged and convenience products, and further reinforce its strong export market position. According to preliminary data, KOMETA generated sales of nearly HUF 58.2 billion last year, with an export share of 44%, processed nearly 71,000 tonnes of meat and is one of the largest employers in Kaposvár and Somogy County with more than 800 employees. “In 2025, we plan to employ more than 280 additional workers, process 35% more meat and embark on a dynamic expansion abroad,” said Giacomo Pedranzini, Managing Director of KOMETA.
In February 2022, KOMETA became the first European meat company to issue a HUF 12 billion green bond under the MNB’s NKP, which will also contribute to its development objectives. Environmental protection remains a key priority for investments to increase capacity, such as the purchase of packaging machines that use recyclable plastic. The company is aiming to reduce its CO2 emissions per kilogram of product by 30% within 5 years through planned energy efficiency improvements and is looking for ways to achieve zero production waste.
